Above: the Medicine Buddha is revered
as the source of the healing arts
Tibetan medicine is one of the oldest known medical systems in the world and has some things in common with traditional Indian and Chinese medicine.
Excerpts from a 2001 message from HH The Dalai Lama:
Tibetan medicine is one of the greatest legacies of Tibetan Buddhist civilization. It is a system that can contribute substantially to maintaining a holistic healthy condition. Like the traditional Indian and Chinese systems, Tibetan medicine views health as a question of balance. A variety of circumstances such as diet, lifestyle, seasonal and mental conditions can disturb this natural balance, which gives rise to different kinds of disorders....Tibetan medicine is deeply influenced by buddhist practice and theory that stresses the indivisible interdependence of mind, body and vitality. As an integrated system of health care Tibetan medicine has served the Tibetan people well for many centuries and I believe can still provide much benefit to humanity at large.
